Get the whole family to start making some dough
Dutch bakery museum Hattem: It’s easy to understand why Amsterdam has become increasingly popular as a short break destination for singles and families of all ages. At just 70 minutes flying time from the UK, you get to spend a lot more time at your destination, and a lot less time getting there. But it’s much more than that. Amsterdam’s green credentials are the envy of other large European cities. Its historic love of bicycles, its 17th century architecture, its 1500 bridges over busy canals, its green city parks, and its many unique visitor attractions, draw thousands to this clean, green city 52 weeks of the year.

One attraction the whole family will enjoy is the Dutch Bakery Museum at Hattem. This fascinating museum tracks the history of Dutch bread, pastry and cake making through the ages. In fact, if you’re visiting before the end of August, the whole family can roll up their sleeves, and get kneading the dough in the museum’s little theatre. The resident baker is quite the comedian, and during the school holidays performs onstage for the youngsters and adults. Guaranteed to have the kids and parents laughing along, each show lasts around 45 minutes.
We all like souvenirs of our travels, and a visit to the museum shop should turn up something a little different. Dating back to the early 1900s, it is full of bread making and baking mementos, postcards and baking merchandise to help make your visit a memorable one. Before completing your trip, call into the onsite Gelagkamer (coffee shop). Enjoy a coffee, tea, or juice, with your choice of the selection of breads, pastries and cakes baked in the museum bakery.
Whether you intend to visit the many attractions around Amsterdam, or to travel out exploring farther afield, the Amsterdam Hostel Annemarie is ideally placed for all your transport needs. From this comfortable, affordable hostel you can stroll or cycle around the city-centre’s attractions, while metro, bus, and tram stops are all close by for those longer journeys.
