The Christmas Markets
When: From Late November until Early January.
Hosting several wonderful Christmas markets throughout the city, Amsterdam is a wonderful place to visit over the Christmas period. From hot chocolate, ice rinks and individual hand-made gifts, the many charming stalls will be sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.
When: Third Saturday of January.
Every year on this day, a special tulip picking garden of approximately 200,000 tulips is set up on Dam square. Thousands of people come to pick a free bouquet of flowers and enjoy the other surprises and promotions arranged by the tulip growers. The event is a riot of colour and kicks off tulip season in the Netherlands.
The Light festival
When: Early December until Late January
Best viewed at night, the light festival is an awe-inspiring event full of the work of local artists, architects and light designers. The festival runs along two routes, each with it’s own themes and set of artworks. You can walk the route, or pay for tour by boat.
Amsterdam Gay Pride
When: Late July until early August
One of the largest and most popular events in the Netherlands, the Amsterdam gay pride festival is a celebration for for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. With an all-inclusive vibe, filled with exhibitions, a canal parade, activities, cultural events and street parties, it is one not to miss!
